We’ve been communicating for eons…so why do we still have miscommunication, misunderstandings, and mixed messages? The larger the company, the more need for a comprehensive communication plan. Change initiatives increase this need.
During times of organizational change, it is important to maintain communication about every step in the process as well as changes in polices and procedures. Over communicating during organizational change should not be a concern. Clear, frequent and focused communication illustrates commitment from the top for the change. In addition, it helps maintain motivation and focus on the vision. It also helps to head off rumors and dispel those that do start.
Developing a good communication plan is essential. Decide what to communicate, identify communication vehicles, for example meetings, reviews, newsletters, etc. Incorporate tools such as technology, memos and reports. Identify stakeholders of information being disseminated. Leaders who understand that walking the talk is one of the best communication tools available.
