Many organizations find that a team-based approach can be effective in accomplishing projects. In addition, utilizing carefully built teams in implementing organizational change has often proven to be highly successful. Moreover, including team performance as a part of a performance management system is a natural extension of an individual based performance system and like individual development; team development is an on going process.

Teams do add a level of complexity to performance management. Organizations can master this challenge by knowing and communicating its vision. Team development, like any other development endeavor becomes successful by linking the mission to the organization’s strategic plan. The strategic plan in turn, fulfills the organization’s mission.

Teams must receive the proper diagnosis to ensure the implementation of the best intervention. In addition, there must be a clear understanding of what a team is supposed to do along with the knowledge, skills and attributes (KSAs) required for the team to function at its optimal level.
